Abstract: Ficus virens var. sublanceolata, Ficus microcarpa L. and Rhododendron pulchrum Sweet were taken as test objects, 1 m ×1 m ×1 m soil profile in south direction was dug to observe the distribution of the root system. It was found that from trunk at a distance of about 1 m in south direction, above 88.1% of the roots mainly distributed in the 0 to 60 cm deep soil layer for Ficus virens var. sublanceolata, above 92.0% of the root system was mainly distributed in the 0 to 60 cm deep soil layer for Ficus microcarpa L., above 43.4% of the root system was mainly distributed in the 0 to 30 cm deep soil layer for Rhododendron pulchrum Sweet. In addition, fibrous roots of the three plants can develop into flat or cloud-like structures in the gaps between purple soil fragments and bricks, and their root structure characteristics are more suitable for the status quo of landscape greening soil in Chongqing city.
