Abstract: To compare the in vitro antibacterial activities of extracts with different polarities from Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek. and Strobilanthes bantonensis Lindau, aqueous extraction and organic solvent extraction methods were adopted to prepare extracts of the two plants using different solvents. The agar plate well diffusion method was applied to determine the in vitro bacteriostatic effects of all extracts against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The results showed that aqueous extracts, aqueous extracts obtained by water extraction and alcohol precipitation, and chloroform extracts from the two plants exhibited varying degrees of inhibitory activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with inhibition zone diameters ranging from 5.41 to 16.99 mm, and no significant difference in antibacterial efficacy was observed between the two plant species. Petroleum ether extracts showed inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with inhibition zone diameters of 5.32-7.70 mm, and their antibacterial activities also had no significant interspecific difference. Acetone extracts and ethanol extracts of different concentrations inhibited Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus, with inhibition zone diameters of 5.94-11.45 mm, and no significant difference in performance between the two plants. Notably, the 70% ethanol and 95% ethanol extracts of Strobilanthes bantonensis Lindau showed inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli, with inhibition zone diameters of (6.42±0.54) mm and (7.74±0.55) mm, respectively, whereas the corresponding extracts of Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek. showed no significant inhibitory effects against this bacterium.
