Abstract: The changes of surface groups and pore size of activated carbon before and after modification and the effects on the adsorption capacity of paraquat were investigated. The activated carbon was characterized by Boehm titration and liquid nitrogen adsorption. The results showed that with the prolongation of nitric acid treatment time, the adsorption effect of YK series activated carbon was mainly influenced by mesoporous and acidic functional groups, thus increasing the adsorption capacity of coconut shell activated carbon to paraquat. Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal models were used to fit the fitted data. The fitted data were more consistent with Langmuir model and adsorption process accords with the quasi-first order kinetic model. Through Dubbininin - Redushkevuch model calculation, which indicated that active carbon adsorption paraquat was a chemical process, Van’t Hoff model showed that paraquat adsorption was a spontaneous feasible manner, coconut shell activated carbon was proved to be a kind of effective adsorption paraquat materials from the aqueous solution.
