Abstract: Hedera helix L. and Chlorophtum comosum variegaturn Hort. were set as the objects, which were put into a sealed glass capsule with length, width, height all of 60 cm. Cigarette smoking of mankind was imitated and two cigarettes were injected into the capsule. Changes of CO and PM2.5 concentrations during 48 h,phenotypes and physiological indexes at 48 h were determined,to investigate the purifying capacity of the two hanging plants to cigarette smoke and their growth and physiological responses. The results showed that H. helix and C. comosum variegaturn both could absorb CO and PM2.5 to some degree and purify the air in the sealed space. The purifying capacity per unit leaf area of H. helix was superior than C. comosum variegaturn. Meanwhile, growth of the two plants were affected by cigarette smoking treatments and leaf chlorosis and necrosis were appeared. After cigarette smoking treatments, levels of reactive oxygen species(including superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide) in leaves of the two plants were significantly increased, resulting in the increases of malondialdehyde, the products of membrane lipid peroxidation. The plants activited peroxidase or synthesized proline to resist the damages and the resistance of H. helix was better than C. comosum variegaturn.
