Abstract: Antimicrobial peptides(AMPs),which exists widely in living nature, are important part of innate immune system. AMPs not only have effective and brand spectrum antibacterial activities, but also have the activities against fungi, viruses, protozoa and cancer. Because of the different mechanism of antimicrobial action with antibiotic, the AMPs would not cause drug resistance and cross resistance. AMPs might be the new generation of antibacterial drugs, even have great market in agriculture, stock farming and aquaculture industry. Combined with the present research situation and development prospect of AMPs,this article summarized the source, categorization, structure, antibacterial mechanism and prospective application of AMPs.

Key words: antimicrobial peptides, source, categorization, structure, antibacterial mechanism, application
