Abstract: Saccharides are organic compounds that are widely distributed and have important functions. They are covalently linked to a particular kind of proteins by glycosyltransferases to form glycoproteins. This modification process named glycosylation. With the development of research technology, the function of glycosylation in virus biology has been continuously explored. Glycosylation is widely used in virus diagnosis, diseases prevention and treatment, such as the development of antiviral vaccines and drugs. In this article, the function and mechanism of glycosylation in the infection of enveloped virus were discussed with virus glycoproteins and host cell glycoproteins as research objects. The frontier direction and practical application were also prospected.
