Abstract: The effects of commercially available fertilizers (organic and chemical fertilizers) and two different polymer slow release fertilizers on soil and plants of tomato(Solanum lycopersicum L.) were studied by pot experiment. Two different polymer slow release fertilizers were prepared by physical mixing and chemical reaction of NPK-containing polymer slow release fertilizer and hydroxyethyl cellulose water-absorbing resin. According to the same fertilizer application amount, commercially available fertilizers and two kinds of polymer slow-release fertilizers were applied to tomato pots respectively to observe the growth of tomato plants(plant height, leaf chlorophyll content, plant dry weight, tomato fruit number and tomato fruit weight), tomato fruit properties(the content of lycopene, vitamins C, organic acids and soluble sugars) and soil physical and chemical properties(moisture content, ammonium nitrogen content, nitrate nitrogen content, catalase and urease activity). The results showed that the soil nutrient content and enzyme activity increased compared with the commercially available fertilizer control soil, and the ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen content increased by 16.61%, 48.06%, and 21.61%, 84.64%, respectively. Two kinds of polymer slow release fertilizers significantly improved the chlorophyll content and tomato fruit quality of tomato leaves, and also increased the number of tomato fruits, increasing by 40.74% and 33.33%. Consequently, hydroxyethyl cellulose polymer slow release fertilizer can be widely used in agricultural production.
