Abstract: Taking 508 consumers in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province as the research object, the structural equation model was used to analyze the perceived risks and benefits of the respondents to genetically modified foods. The results showed that compared with the perceived benefits, more respondents believed that genetically modified foods could cause harm to human health and the environment. There was a significant negative relationship between respondents' perceived risks and perceived benefits. It was also shown that females, respondents with higher income, those with fewer family members, those with familly members who needed for special care, and those with bad health condition had higher perceived risks of genetically modified foods. Males, those less affluent people had higher perceived benefits than their counterparts. Based on this, it was suggested to provide consumers with scientific and objective information related to the risks and benefits of genetically modified food, so that consumers could form their own judgment and had more initiative in the market choice.
