Abstract: Determination of flavonoid, polyphenol, total terpene and their contents in loquat[Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.] leaf extracts by spectrophotometry, DPPH and FRAP method were used to determine the antioxidant activity, cough model induced by ammonia liquor in mice to observe the antitussive effects, the method of phenol red execretion in mice was used to investigate expectorant effects, and the correlation of composition and the activity were analyzed. Results showed that the loquat leaf extracts had certain antioxidant activity, the flavonoids were significant better than triterpenoid acid, the polysaccharides were weaker, and the antioxidant activity related to the content of flavonoids and total polyphenols. All the 6 kinds of loquat leaf extract had certain antitussis and expectorant activity, the flavonoids and triterpenoid acid were better than the polysaccharides, the times of cough and the content of flavonoid showed significantly negative correlation, the saponins had certain dosage-effect relation with prolonged the incubation period of cough and expectorable activity. The extracts of loquat leaf had antioxidation and antitussis and expectorant activity, flavonoids and polyphenols could be important part of the antioxidant component, flavonoids and saponins were associated with antitussis and expectorant activity. Through the refined, the effective components can be enriched and the relevant activity can be improved.
