Abstract: To study the suitable area of apple planting in Yunnan province, choosing apples in Yunnan province as the research object, 10 indicators in three aspects of climate, topography and soil were selected as evaluation factors from 1∶250,000 geographic information data of Yunnan province, national 90 m resolution DEM data, climate information of 109 meteorological stations in Yunnan province from 1981 to 2010 and sunshine hours and soil information of 125 counties and cities. Analytic hierarchy process was applied to evaluate the weight factor, and spatial interpolation and reclassification methods were used to derive the distribution results. The map of apple planting zones in Yunnan province was divided into the best suitable, comparative suitable, sub-suitable and unsuitable zones. The results showed that Yunnan province enjoyed great potentials for apple planting, which gave the opportunity for further growth in apple planting industry. Especially, such as Zhaotong, Lijiang, Kunming and Qujing, those areas were suitable zones for apple planting in Yunnan province, because of the large temperature difference between day and night, sufficient sunshine and abundant rainfall, they exactly provided the appropriate environment needed by the apple growth and development.
